About this mattress

This single mattress runs 92cm x 188cm, the New Zealand standard single footprint, and is listed as the LivingTopia FirmNest Prime Single Mattress. Comfort layers, top down: the euro top itself, padded to the edge rather than stitched short of it, and below it 3.5cm of wave foam, 1cm of gel memory foam and 1cm of high-density foam. The support beneath them is 1.8mm and 1.9mm wire wound into a 24cm spring layer with seven zones, and the surface reads Firm, 2 out of 10 where 10 is softest. Cover fabric is soft knitted fabric, certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, over CertiPUR-US® certified foams. Total height is 30cm with a euro top padded flush to the edge, and the mattress weighs 21.0kg. The mattress ships in a roll-packed carton (we do not hold confirmed dimensions for this size), which one person can usually manage through a doorway and up a flight of stairs, and unrolled on the base it is typically at full height within 72 hours.

Who this mattress suits

  • Bunks, trundles and low bases, where the 30 cm height needs checking against the guard rail first.
  • Adults sleeping alone who want a surface at 2 out of 10 and 188 cm of length.
  • Tight rooms where 92 cm of width has to leave space for a desk, and the Prime still has to hold its shape.

Why choose the FirmNest Prime

Take the foam away and what is left is 24 cm seven-zone pocket springs on 1.8 mm and 1.9 mm wire. On a 92 cm single there is only ever one person's weight on the unit, so the springs work in a narrow band and the 30 cm build stays even from one side to the other.

The feel of the surface comes from a three-layer comfort stack of 3.5 cm wave foam, 1 cm gel memory foam and 1 cm high-density foam, under a euro top padded out to the perimeter. On a single those layers only ever carry one person, so they wear at one rate across the 30 cm build.

Firmness climbs through the range: Classic 5 out of 10, then Plus 4, Pro 3 and Prime 2, with 10 the softest end. A Prime single is the firmest single in FirmNest. Over the Pro single it adds seven zones instead of three, a 24 cm spring unit instead of 20 cm, and a euro top; if that is firmer than you want, the Classic single at 5 out of 10 is the softest option. On a 92 cm single that choice is yours alone, so pick the number you actually want rather than a compromise; this one is 2 out of 10.

Each spring sits in its own pocket, which keeps more of a movement local to where it happens. For bedding, the 30 cm height calls for deep-wall single fitted sheets, and the comfort layers are on one side only, so rotate the mattress head to foot every few months rather than flipping it.

BeddingDeep-wall single fitted sheets

Sheets first. Bedding needs to be deep-wall: 30 cm is deeper than a standard single fitted sheet allows. The mattress ships rolled inside a roll-packed carton (we do not hold confirmed dimensions for this size), which keeps the delivery to something that fits in a car boot and up a narrow stair. Unrolled, it is typically at full height within 72 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How firm is the FirmNest Prime Single?

Firm, 2 out of 10 where 10 is softest. Firmness is felt rather than measured, so on a single use the number to compare our mattresses with each other.

How does the FirmNest Prime compare with the Pro?

The Prime is 2 out of 10, the firmest of the four, on a scale where 10 is softest. The Pro below it is 3 out of 10, 26 cm rather than 30 cm, with three zones instead of seven, a 20 cm spring unit instead of 24 cm, and a tight top, where the Prime finishes with a euro top. Further down, the Plus is 4 and the Classic 5. On a single you are only choosing for yourself, which makes the step easier to judge.

What does the gel memory foam layer do?

It is a 1 cm layer under the euro top. It softens the first few centimetres and spreads pressure where you press into it, which takes some of the hardness off a 2 out of 10 surface. It is a comfort layer and nothing more. Under the euro top of a single it is the first thing you meet.

What certification does this mattress have?

The cover is certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 and the foams are CertiPUR-US® certified. Certificate numbers are available from our team on request.

What sheets do I need for this mattress?

At 30 cm deep this needs deep-wall single fitted sheets; standard-depth sheets tend to pull off the corners. Single fitted sheets are easy to find in New Zealand; check the packet quotes a wall depth of at least 30 cm.

Can this mattress be flipped?

The comfort layers are on one side, so it is a single-sided mattress. Rotate it head to foot every few months, which spreads the wear along the 188 cm length.
