About this mattress

The Cooling Prime 7 Zone Pocket Spring Mattress in Queen is a 153cm x 203cm queen pocket spring mattress built to standard New Zealand dimensions. Support comes from a 30cm independent pocket spring unit divided into seven zones, under 2cm of high-density foam and a 1cm comfort layer that together set the feel at Medium Firm, 4 out of 10 where 10 is softest. The cover is an ice silk fabric that feels cool against the skin, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified, and the foams inside are CertiPUR-US® certified. The mattress is 33cm thick with a euro top padded flush to the edge, has handles on both sides, and weighs 42.5kg. It ships roll-packed in a 32cm x 32cm x 163cm box, so a 33cm queen reaches an upstairs bedroom without being folded, and it is typically at full height within 72 hours of unrolling.

Who this mattress suits

  • Couples on the 153 cm x 203 cm size most New Zealand frames and bedding are built around.
  • Main bedrooms replacing a sagging queen, where the base stays and only the mattress changes.
  • Two adults of different weights who want the springs under each side to answer separately.

Why choose the Cooling Prime

The queen is the size most New Zealand main bedrooms are planned around, and at 153 cm x 203 cm it gives two adults about 76 cm each. Seven zones across 30 cm of pocket spring means the section under your shoulders behaves differently from the section under your hips, and because each spring sits in its own pocket, less of one person's movement travels to the other side.

This range is deliberately not a straight line from soft to firm, and the queen is where most people compare it, so the numbers are worth reading. The Cooling Pro is the firmest at 2 out of 10 where 10 is softest and the Cooling Prime sits at medium firm, 4 out of 10. Prime is the deepest and most zoned of the two, with seven zones over 30 cm of spring against five over 24 cm on the Pro. If the surface should push back hard, that is the Pro; if you want the support divided into more sections under a slightly softer surface, that is the Prime.

Ice silk is the cover fabric. It is smooth and densely woven, and it carries heat away from the skin faster than a brushed knit, so the top surface feels cool at the moment you lie down. It is a surface effect only. The cover is certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 and the foams to CertiPUR-US®. Certificate numbers are available from our team on request.

A queen at 42.5 kg is not something to wrestle with, which is why there are handles on both sides. They are the difference between rotating it head to foot every few months and putting the job off.

Thirty-three centimetres is well above standard sheet depth, so check the wall measurement on the sheet packet rather than assuming; deep-wall queen sheets are the ones to buy. Frequently asked questions

How firm is this mattress?

Medium Firm, 4 out of 10 on our scale where 10 is softest. Thirty centimetres of that 33 cm is spring, so the support is deep, and the 3 cm of foam over it is what gives at the surface. Firmness is felt rather than measured, so the number is for comparing our mattresses with each other, not a promise of how it will feel to you.

Is the Cooling Prime firmer than the Cooling Pro?

No, the Pro is firmer. The Cooling Pro is 2 out of 10 where 10 is softest and the Cooling Prime is 4 out of 10, so the Prime has more give at the surface. In exchange the Prime is the deeper and more divided mattress, with seven zones over 30 cm of spring against the Pro's five zones over 24 cm. Choose on that basis: hard push-back means Pro, more zones under a softer top means Prime.

What does the ice silk cover actually do?

Ice silk makes the top of the mattress feel cool at the moment you lie on it. The fibre is smooth and densely woven, so it carries body heat away from the skin faster than a brushed knit. That is the whole of it.

What certification does this mattress have?

The cover is certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 and the foams inside are certified to CertiPUR-US®, so both the fabric against your skin and the foam under it are covered. Certificate numbers are available from our team on request.

What sheets do I need for this mattress?

Deep-wall queen fitted sheets. This mattress is 33 cm thick, so a sheet cut for a standard depth will pull off the corners. Check the wall measurement on the packet and make sure it is 33 cm or more before you buy.

Will my partner's movement carry across the bed?

Some of it will, but less than on an open coil mattress. The springs are pocketed individually and grouped into seven zones, so a spring compresses under the weight on it rather than pulling its neighbours down with it. A 153 cm width also puts more distance between you. Rotate the mattress head to foot every few months using the handles; it is one-sided and should not be flipped.
