120cm wide by 40cm deep is the Alton low boy footprint, with a finished height of 75.5cm. Measure the wall run first, then add space in front for a drawer to clear fully. If 120cm is more than the wall allows, the 80cm Alton tallboy holds the same six drawers in a narrower stack.

75.5cm is the Alton low boy height, which clears most residential window sills and leaves the glass unobstructed. Measure from your floor to the underside of the sill and allow a couple of centimetres. The flat 25mm top board above the drawers is then free for a dressing mirror, a lamp or a plant.

Six drawers spread across a 120cm frame give separate homes for shirts, knitwear, underwear and accessories rather than one deep well where everything mixes. Wooden handles sit on each front. Because the drawers run side by side rather than stacking to 114cm, everything stays at or below waist height and is easy to see into.

Particle board with wooden handles and legs is the listed construction of the Alton low boy, finished in wood-look melamine in natural and white. The Scandi style legs raise the body clear of the floor. Melamine wipes down with a damp cloth, which suits a top surface that doubles as a dressing area.

Three cartons make up the Alton low boy, weighing 16.5kg, 18.5kg and 16kg. The longest measures 131cm x 47.5cm x 8.5cm, so check that a stair turn or lift will take a 131cm board. Assembled the unit is 46.5kg, which is why it is worth carrying the flat cartons in before building.

Assembly is required on the Alton low boy, and six drawers means six drawer boxes to make up as well as the carcass, so set aside an unhurried afternoon. Work on a blanket to protect the melamine, keep the fixings sorted by step, and check the carcass is square before fitting the drawer fronts.
