About this mattress

This queen mattress runs 153cm x 203cm, the New Zealand standard queen footprint, and is listed as the LivingTopia FirmNest Classic Queen Mattress. Above the springs: a thin comfort stack — 2.5cm wave foam, 1cm high-density foam — behind a Tencel cover that moves moisture off the surface quickly. The springs themselves are an unzoned pocket spring layer 16cm deep, using 1.8mm wire, and together they read Medium, 5 out of 10 where 10 is softest. Cover fabric is Tencel fabric, certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, over CertiPUR-US® certified foams. The mattress is 19cm deep, has a tight top, and comes in at 26.7kg. The mattress ships in a 28cm x 28cm x 163cm carton, which spares the queen most New Zealand frames are built around from being carried at full width, and unrolled on the base it is typically at full height within 72 hours.

Who this mattress suits

  • Two adults on the 153 cm x 203 cm size most New Zealand bed frames are built around, at 5 out of 10.
  • A main bedroom being furnished from scratch, where queen bedding is easiest to buy and the Tencel cover decides the feel.
  • Households replacing a tired queen and wanting 5 out of 10 rather than the sag they have now.

Why choose the FirmNest Classic

Take the foam away and what is left is 16 cm pocket springs on 1.8 mm wire, with no zoning. A 153 cm queen carries two adults on the size most New Zealand frames are built for, and the 19 cm build keeps the surface level between them.

Between you and the springs: 2.5 cm of contoured wave foam, then 1 cm of denser foam, beneath Tencel — a cellulose fibre that absorbs moisture and releases it quickly rather than holding it. On a queen the comfort layers cover 153 cm of width, and the specification does not change between the middle and the sides.

Firmness climbs through the range: Classic 5 out of 10, then Plus 4, Pro 3 and Prime 2, with 10 the softest end. Moving up from a Classic queen to a Plus queen buys one point of firmness, 4 cm of height and three rows of 1.9 mm perimeter wire; moving up again reaches zoned springs and gel memory foam. Most queen buyers are choosing for two, so it is worth both of you knowing this is 5 out of 10 before it arrives.

Pocket springs move on their own, so less of your turning reaches the other side of the bed. Queen sheets are the easiest bedding to buy in New Zealand; take the standard New Zealand version to clear 19 cm, and rotate the mattress head to foot every few months.

Frequently asked questions

How firm is the FirmNest Classic Queen?

Medium, 5 out of 10 where 10 is softest. Shape, weight and sleeping position all change how a queen reads to the person on it.

How does the FirmNest Classic compare with the Plus?

The Classic is 5 out of 10 and the Plus is 4 out of 10, where 10 is softest, so the Plus is the firmer of the two. The Plus is also 23 cm tall against 19 cm, swaps the Tencel cover for an anti-pill knit, and adds three rows of thicker 1.9 mm wire around the perimeter. Below the Plus there is nothing softer in FirmNest than this Classic. Queen buyers most often move one step at a time rather than jumping the range.

What does the Tencel cover actually do?

Tencel is a cellulose fibre that takes up moisture and releases it again quickly, so the surface stays dry-feeling rather than clammy. That is a fabric property and nothing more — we make no antibacterial, hypoallergenic, allergy or cooling claims for it. Across a queen the fabric is the same in the middle as it is at the sides.

What certification does this mattress have?

The cover is certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 and the foams are CertiPUR-US® certified. Certificate numbers are available from our team on request.

What sheets do I need for this mattress?

A 19 cm sidewall works with standard New Zealand queen fitted sheets, and a deep-wall sheet will sit loose. Queen sheets are the easiest size to buy here, so the only thing to watch is the 19 cm wall.

Will I feel my partner moving?

Less of it than on an open-coil bed. The springs are individually pocketed, so a turn compresses a local group rather than the whole surface, and 153 cm of width puts some distance between you. Some movement will still be felt.
